I am so grateful for the gift of Skype and what it means for my relationship with my nieces and nephew. (I realize that Skype is not a new technology, but since I just recently got my first web-cam computer, it’s new to me.)
It couldn’t have come at a better time. Just about a week ago, my sister and I were both in the same mood . . . melancholy about missing each other. (She lives in Florida while I live in Maine.)
After discovering that we each had a web cam, we made plans to download Skype. We had our first “visit” later that night.
My sister and I were both so happy to “see” each other that we were giggling like a couple of little kids. (Her husband found it quite entertaining.)
Then I got to see my 7 year old nephew and my twin nieces, who are three and a half. My face and my heart were beaming with joy! The girls were fascinated and not quite ready for conversation. Instead they kept saying, “Hi! . . . Hi! . . . Hi!” It was adorable.
I joked that I was so happy to see them but wished I could hug them and kiss them and squish them and squeeze them. I said I’d have to blow kisses instead. That set off a frenzy of blowing kisses all around.
I had a conversation with my nephew and spoke about his upcoming birthday. I got the full run down on all the gifts he was asking for . . . and the very next day I was able to go to the store and purchase something he specifically talked about.
Then a week later I was able to “participate” in the festivities of his birthday party!
This means more to me than I can begin to describe. Most importantly it means that I’ll get to form a relationship with these little ones even though we’re at opposite ends of the country. It means that they’ll be able to know me and remember me in between physical visits. It means that distance will never again cause me to miss out on a birthday, a glimpse at Christmas morning or a face to face conversation whenever I feel the urge.
Thank you, more please.
(By the way, we say “thank you, more please” to acknowledge that we appreciate the blessings that we’re receiving AND that we’re willing to receive those blessings and even more.)
What are you grateful for? What has you saying, “thank you, more please”? We’d love to hear about it! Please bless us by sharing.
